Airfield joining and other useful information

  • FAMO is a busy training airfield.  All aircraft MUST have two way radio communication.
  • Q & As contains helpful information wrt aircraft on a flight plan for FAMO.
  • Prior to joining, monitor 126.225 Mhz for latest FAGG ATIS - (Automatic Terminal Information Service)
  • Aerodrome located in high density flying training area (3500 FT ALT/GND)
  • Remain clear of FAGG TMA I (FL145/3500FT ALT)

  • Unmanned airfield joining procedure by all fixed wing aircraft. Join overhead 2500 FT ALT on FAGG QNH (except when parachute dropping is in progress) The "dead side" to the North of the airfield not below 1500 FT ALT crossing extended runway centrelines.
  • Helicopters, Gyrocopters and Microlights (WCM's) join not above 1300 FT ALT on a downwind leg for RW in use.
  • Fixed wing circuit South of RWY 10/28 - 1500'.
  • Helicopters, Gyrocopters and Microlights circuits North of RWY 10/28 not above 1300 FT.
  • Aircraft to remain clear of FAR 150 (1500FT ALT/GND) 2NM West of THR 10 (PETROSA).
  • Avoid unnecessary low flying in vicinity of aerodrome. Ostrich farming, horse riding school south of airfield and residential areas near airfield.

FAMO is no longer in the AIP

Because we as an airfield aren’t compliant with ICAO regulations/requirements (Para 2), FAMO airfield data is no longer captured within the AIP.  This isn’t unique to FAMO.  There are 84 registered airfields and 88 Helistops which like FAMO, don’t comply to ICAO requirements.  As a service to the aviation community, SACAA has created an aerodrome/heliport directory within the AIC system.  I’ve researched this and insert a few AIC links below which will assist us all.  I suggest you open & read sequentially the links below:
So the information is still available to us in the aviation community – merely captured “elsewhere".
If there are any omission or errors that catch your eye, please advise.
