« back The well known Bartolomeu Dias Museum Complex consists of the Maritime Museum which houses a life size replica of Dias' Caravel. Nearby is the Post Office Tree under which Pedro de Ataide left an important letter in a shoe in 1500. A wooden symbolic cross was erected in 1992 on the site of the first Christian Chapel which was built in 1501. The Shell Museum, is the largest in South Africa, with it's unique shell display and marine aquariums. Ancient Khoi found shelter in the Cape St Blaize Cave at the Point from which a hiking trial winds its way for 13.5 km. Artefacts found in this cave are housed in the Culture Museum. For the more adventurous try the Great White Shark Experience, a 4x4 game viewing drive or a Bungee jump off the Gouritz River Bridge. Relax on a cruise around Seal Island and see the whales up close in season. The town is small enough for you to abandon your car and walk around enjoying the quaint old buildings and homes as well as the historical cemetery. Mossel Bay also boasts a variety of accommodation establishments and is renowned for its seafood restaurants. Whether you are just passing by or entering Mossel Bay, its development is spectacular.
